The core formula is:

Position size in lots = risk amount ÷ (stop-loss distance in pips × pip value per lot)

First calculate the money risk:

Risk amount = account equity × risk percentage

When entering the percentage as a decimal, 1% is 0.01, 0.5% is 0.005 and 2% is 0.02.

For a USD-denominated account trading EUR/USD, one standard lot is commonly worth about $10 per pip. Therefore, a 0.10-lot position is worth about $1 per pip, and a 0.01-lot position is worth about $0.10 per pip.

Those simple values do not apply unchanged to every pair. Pip value depends on the lot size, pip size, current exchange rate and the currency in which your account is denominated.

How to calculate your forex trade size step by step

Step 1: Find your account equity

Use current equity rather than an old deposit amount. Equity includes the balance plus or minus the unrealised profit or loss on open positions. If you have no open trades, balance and equity are usually the same.

For example, assume your account equity is $500.

Step 2: Choose a fixed risk percentage

Many developing traders choose a small, predefined amount such as 0.5% or 1% while they build consistency. The appropriate level depends on your circumstances, strategy and ability to tolerate a losing streak. It should never be an amount that causes emotional or financial pressure.

At 1% risk on a $500 account:

$500 × 0.01 = $5 maximum planned loss

This is the theoretical loss at the stop before considering spread, commission, slippage or a possible market gap. For that reason, some traders leave a small buffer rather than sizing right up to the exact limit.

Step 3: Measure the stop-loss distance

A pip is a standard unit used to describe a small movement in a currency pair. For most non-JPY pairs, one pip is 0.0001. For many JPY pairs, one pip is 0.01. A five-digit quote may also show a fractional pip, often called a pipette.

Suppose your EUR/USD entry is 1.0850 and your protective stop is 1.0825. The distance is:

1.0850 − 1.0825 = 0.0025 = 25 pips

The stop should normally be placed where your trade idea is invalidated, not at a distance chosen only to produce a convenient lot size. If the resulting position is too large or too small, the responsible response is to adjust the trade or skip it, not to move the stop arbitrarily.

Step 4: Confirm the pip value

For EUR/USD in a USD account, one standard lot of 100,000 euros has a pip value of approximately $10 because:

100,000 × 0.0001 = 10 USD

So the pip value per lot is approximately $10. For a mini lot it is approximately $1 per pip, and for a micro lot it is approximately $0.10 per pip.

For pairs where USD is not the quote currency, the value changes with the exchange rate. For example, for USD/JPY at a price of 150.00, one standard lot has a pip value in yen of:

100,000 × 0.01 = 1,000 JPY per pip

Converted to USD at 150.00, that is approximately $6.67 per pip. A calculator or trading platform should update this value as the price changes. If your account currency is not USD, the final conversion must also use the relevant exchange rate.

Step 5: Calculate the position size

Using the $500 account example:

  • Risk amount: $5
  • Stop-loss distance: 25 pips
  • EUR/USD pip value per standard lot: approximately $10

Now apply the formula:

$5 ÷ (25 × $10) = 0.02 standard lots

That equals approximately 2,000 currency units, or two micro lots. If your broker accepts 0.01-lot increments, 0.02 lots is the calculated size. If your exact result falls between permitted increments, round down rather than up when staying within a maximum-risk limit is the priority.

The $100 example produces 0.005 lots. If the broker's minimum size is 0.01 lots, trading 0.01 lots with a 20-pip stop would risk approximately $2, or 2% of the account, before costs. That may be more than your plan allows. The correct choices may be to use a broker and account structure that permits smaller sizing, widen or refine the setup only according to your rules, or avoid the trade.

For the $1,000 account risking 0.5%, the exact result is 0.0125 lots. If only two decimal places are allowed, rounding down to 0.01 lots creates approximately $4 of pip risk, not $5. Rounding up to 0.02 lots creates approximately $8 of pip risk, so it should not be treated as an equivalent position.

Why stop-loss distance changes position size

Risk-based sizing creates an inverse relationship between stop distance and lot size. A wider stop requires a smaller position. A tighter stop permits a larger position, provided the stop is technically justified.

With $10 of risk per pip per standard lot and a $10 risk budget:

  • A 20-pip stop gives 0.05 lots: $10 ÷ (20 × $10) = 0.05.
  • A 40-pip stop gives 0.025 lots: $10 ÷ (40 × $10) = 0.025.
  • A 80-pip stop gives 0.0125 lots: $10 ÷ (80 × $10) = 0.0125.

The monetary risk remains about $10 in each case, assuming the same pip value and no additional costs. This is why using the same 0.10-lot size on every setup is not consistent risk management.

Account equity, leverage and margin are different

Leverage allows a trader to control a larger notional position with less margin. Margin is the amount set aside by the broker to open and maintain that position. Margin is not the same as the amount you are risking at the stop.

A simplified margin formula is:

Margin = (lot size in currency units × price, where conversion is required) ÷ leverage

For a 10,000-unit EUR/USD position at 1.1000 with 1:100 leverage, the notional value is approximately $11,000 and the simplified margin is approximately $110. The actual calculation can vary with account currency, instrument specifications and broker rules.

Leverage does not automatically increase the planned stop-loss risk. Risk is determined primarily by position size, stop distance and pip value. However, high leverage can make it easier to open positions that are too large, and insufficient free margin can lead to forced liquidation. Check both position risk and margin requirements before placing an order.

Costs a basic forex risk calculator may miss

A calculator is an estimate, not a guarantee of the exact loss. Consider these factors:

  • Spread: the difference between the bid and ask price. A spread can affect the effective entry and stop distance, especially for short-term trades.
  • Commission: some account types charge a separate fee per transaction or per lot.
  • Slippage: an order may fill at a different price during fast markets or limited liquidity.
  • Gaps: a stop may be executed beyond its requested level after a weekend or sudden event.
